GAZETEER: Grey Millstone Quarries            Home           Millstone page
This is a site between the Surprise View car park and Mother Cap; there has clearly been day working here for centuries, with isolated, part finished stones, both domed and cylindrical, scattered over a large area. Some oddities, such as a rough with a finished eye, suggest this may have been an area used to learn the millstone trade. The first two photos below are from a clearly defined delph. Many stones are partly buried, suggesting the quarry was abandoned long ago, perhaps early 19th century.
